Introduction to Crystallography

Introduction to Crystallography

  • Crystallography the study of crystals.
  • Solids are classified into two types they are crystalline solid and non-crystalline (or) amorphous

Crystalline solids:

  • Atoms are arranged in a periodic manner in all the three (dimension) directions.
  • It may be a single crystal or poly crystal as physical property varies with direction
  • They are also called as anisotropic substances
  • They are made up of metallic or non-metallic crystals
  • Metallic: Cu, Al, Ag, Ab, Mn etc..

Non-metallic: Plastic ,Polymers etc……

Non-crystalline solids:

  • The arrangement of atoms is random, they are called as amorphous solids.
  • As they have no directional properties they are called as isotropic substances.
  • They do not possess any regular shape
  • They have night melting points
