Anything that an animal, plant, or human eat to nourish their body for proper growth and maintenance is called food. To cook food we need different kinds of ingredients.
For example: to cook boiled rice, you need only two ingredient water and rice. On the other hand, to prepare vegetable curry, you need a vegetable, spices, salt, oil, and other ingredients. Ingredients are components used to prepare food.

A food ingredient is any substance that is added to food to achieve the desired effect. The term “food ingredient” includes food additives, which are substances added to foods for specific technical and/or functional purposes during processing, storage or packaging.
For Example, Srinivas wants to eat something special on Sunday. He asked his mother to make biryani. Srinivas wanted to help his mother. His mother asked him to prepare a list of materials that would be required to make biryani. Here is the list made by Srinivas - rice, salt, jeera, tomato, potato, onion, etc.
Srinivas was surprised that while cooking boiled rice we need only two materials raw rice and water. But for making biryani we need many materials. To make different kinds of food we need different materials. These materials which are required to prepare food are known as ingredients.
